Why should we abolish capital punishment Whether the capital punishment, the legal punishment that deprives an individual’s life, is constitutional, moral or necessary is constantly debated. Although the United States maintain the retentionist view of capital punishment that executes hundreds of criminals each year, many revolutionists are challenging our current legal system and trying to abolish the use of capital punishment. In this paper, I will discuss the theory of the capital punishment, and the controversial points of the abolitionist and retentionist debate. Siding with abolitionist argument, I will be presenting my arguments beginning with retentionist view, then move into abolitionist rejection. In terms of consciousness and happiness, the capital punishment deprives criminal of his perception and sensation, two ess ential abilities of human beings, and permanently excludes him from all beauty and enjoyments in the world. Although retentionists might say that the long-term imprisonment is more painful since it evokes an endless feeling of tediousness and suffering, it is undeniable that the capital punishment irreversibly eradicates the possibility of feeling happiness. Literally a denial of life, capital punishment is incomparable to other punishment in depth and severity, while at the same time it is the harshest punishment that has no crime deserving it because an individual’s humanity can be denied under no circumstance. As indicated in the eighth amendment, a punishment that degrades human dignity will be considered â€Å"cruel and unusual† and the use of such punishment is unconstitutional. By denying all four components of humanity, the capital punishment transforms criminals into non-humans without any human dignity left.
