Freedom Of Freedom Essay - 753 Words

Freedom of speech, press, and religion is like a traffic light. The by-laws are always changing and everyone must obey them. What is freedom? Freedom is the act of doing what one pleases without the fear of government intervening or restraining the action. So, if our freedoms are restricted, are we really free? Personally, I do consider the freedoms of the Bill of Rights counts as freedom. It is however, an opinionated topic and just like the by-laws of the amendments, everyone’s backing case will be different. â€Å"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition†¦show more content†¦Take Gregory Lee Johnson for example. Johnson assumed that the act of flag burning was protected under the First Amendment. So he went and desecrated a United States flag. On June 21, 1989, the Supreme Cour t made its final decision on the court case Texas vs Johnson. The court ruled in favor of Johnson. They agreed that though the act is viewed as offensive that it was protected under the First Amendment. They, however put laws in the way of that happening again without legal action. While some cases become huge and are taken to the Supreme Court, others stay on more local levels. That, however doesn’t make them any less important. The last court case was all about freedom of speech. Now let’s take a look at freedom of religion. Down in the little town of Negrete Louisiana a little boy got bullied for not being Christian. Lane is a Buddhist practicing boy who was forced to do things against his religion by staff of Negrete high school. The lawsuit even states â€Å"school officials have a longstanding custom, policy, and practice of promoting and inculcating Christian beliefs†. The school even had a picture of God hanging in the hallway. The teacher of the little boy was a science teacher and was only teaching about how God made the Earth. This case is one of many that helped take religion out of schools. Was it for the better? For the final piece of the first amendment, we will look at a case about freedom of press. Maslows Hierarchy Of Needs - 1081 Words

Throughout human history people have sought to better themselves and ascend to higher levels beyond what others thought possible. As many might say, life is more than just surviving, it is about doing the things one dreams of, learning new things, mastering new skills, and being with the people that one enjoys being with. On the contrary, not all people get to do any of those things. It seems that the ultimate goal is self-actualization and life fulfillment, yet why do people never seem to reach that point? Humanistic psychology is a value orientation that holds a hopeful, constructive view of human beings and of their substantial capacity to be self-determining (AHP). It focuses on the self, experiences, and motivation systems unrelated to rewards or unconscious desires (McLeod, Maslow s Hierarchy of Needs). Abraham Maslow, one of the leading psychologists in humanistic psychology, conceived the idea of the hierarchy of needs that revealed what motivates people to do the things that they do. Similarly, Carl Rodgers later added that for a person to grow, they need an environment that provides them with genuineness, acceptance, and empathy (McLeod, Carl Rogers). In Maslow’s hierarchy of needs one cannot get to the top without first starting from the bottom and working upwards through each level. As can be seen in the diagram on page 2, from the bottom up Maslow states that physiological needs must be met, then safety, love, esteem, and self-actualization. The Importance of Nuclear Power - 951 Words

Did you know nuclear power supplies about 17% of the world’s electricity? (Greenhalgh 1980). It is widely known that the main source of energy, fossil fuel, is being depleted and human population is constantly growing (Greenhalgh 1980). To prevent limiting energy in the future, alternative energy sources must be developed. Nuclear energy is believed to be the best alternative future energy source to replace current energy sources such as fossil fuels. Nuclear energy is superior in its abundance, environment conservation, and safety. Therefore, it should be justified and expanded. However, debatable concerns and weaknesses of nuclear energy challenge further promotion of the nuclear energy development. To accommodate dramatic increases of energy demand by humans, development of nuclear energy is crucial because nuclear energy is abundant. Fossil fuels, currently the biggest supply of energy source, are being depleted yet, energy demand is expected to quadruple by the end of the next century (Zaleski 2000). However, nuclear power can reduce oil dependency and prevent the increasing price of fossil fuel due to limited supply and increased demand. In fact, nuclear power is readily available and will last for hundreds of years as Uranium, the main generator of nuclear energy, is abundant in the ocean (Ferguson 2011). In fact, one pound of U-235, the fissionable material, is equivalent to 1400 tons of coal and to 6000 barrels of oil. Why should we abolish capital punishment Whether the capital punishment, the legal punishment that deprives an individual’s life, is constitutional, moral or necessary is constantly debated. On Tuesday, April 15, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. two abnds at San Jose State University had their first concert of the spring 2014 and directed by Dahveed Behroozi, Jason Lewis, and John Shifflett. This conert divided and performed in two parts: Part 1:The Bjlort Jazz Combo, and Part 2: The Free Lunch Jazz Sextet. Those program allowed me to experience the sound of the Jazz music. The music told the audience about the story of music by the tempo and pattens. My favorite performer in this concert is Veno Bender. He played the electric bass guitar in this concert, and he appeared most of the solo in part 1. Although I was impressed by the bass and the guitar solo in the first part, part 2 made a more lasting impression on me. The ambiance of the performance was very professional yet casual. The concert started with Fisrt Rain and Jean Marie. They combined those pieces and began slowly as the bass was building the parttern of the music. As the passion of this piece heated up at first, the mood s uddenly became faster as the pattern of this piece felt like Blues with guitar solo. I was stock by the sound of guitar because the guitar was a wireless guitar. I could not imagine the price of his guitar because he tuned his guitar as the sound of piano without sound effect pedal. After the guitar solo, bass started its’ solo part. This part was one of my personal favorites because I like the partnership of the bass and the drums of the song. The beat of the drum bass was so deep, and theShow MoreRelatedHow Rock N Roll Changed America Essay1241 Words   |  5 PagesWorld War 2. Music plays a significant part in America s Cold War culture. Mass Media Influence on Youth We are all active consumers of different kinds of information, the flow of which is continuously growing. Abundance of TV channels, websites on the Internet, a huge amount of video and audio production, newspapers and magazines – all these information has become an integral part of our lives. Every morning we watch TV, read newspapers, on the workplace during lunch we are sharing the latest news in sport, fashion; talking about movies we saw with our colleagues. Remember – children repeat everything what they see? Hence, we may conclude that virtual representation of violence has a big influence on chi ldren`s behaviour – by making them more aggressive, and more interested in those kind of things. In order to see the amount of violence on TV, I did a small research. I went to website of one of the most popular channels in Russia and streamed one day TV schedule. As was found, the schedule is full of programs, the content of which is very violent; news and detective shows, and criminal columns are translating robberies, murders, and all kind of acts of violence. In average, during one hour of on-air broadcasting there are four scenes of violence, which i.e. every 15 minutes our children are becoming witnesses of. Young people see about 10 thousands scenes of violence during one year. Hence, by the time they finish school, they are becoming witnesses and sometimes â€Å"participants† of about 100 thousands TV and computer â€Å"crimes†. Little by little images of violence are becoming not so shocking, and are perceived like a spectacle. Children are getting used to it and taking it in their stride. Moreover, 45% of young people who spend inShow MoreRelatedThe Influence of Mass Media on Youth Culture Essay3088 Words   |  13 PagesThe Influence of Mass Media on Youth Culture 1 . . . People have become overly dependent on technology Free Essays

The World Wide Web is a huge world that should be controlled. The Internet has many advantages and disadvantages. It is either to be a useful tool or to be a harmful weapon. We will write a custom essay sample on People have become overly dependent on technology or any similar topic only for you Order Now The Internet had many effects and side effects in the social life, Safety and also purchasing or shopping. If it was controlled all those will be much better and life will be easier. However, if it was uncontrolled that will lead to huge problems. The peaceful tool will convert to be a harmful weapon. It won’t kill humans but I will kill nations and cultures. First, the Internet had developed the teaching methods and made the education uch easier and better. The student can look up for any subject that he need in the internet and It will Just pop up to him. It is better than referring to books. Internet will take you seconds to find specific information, while books may take hours and day to look up on them. The student homework’s, assignments and projects also require him to use Internet. The students and kids are totally able to look up for anything in the Internet, so that can lead to one of two things. First, Either the kids will use that to improve their skills, knowledge and they will catch up with the technology. Second, they will start to look up for pornographic media and it will be easy to obtain. It will destroy a lot of their parents work. They may addict online games as most of the kids in this time. This will cause them their social life. They wont be able to make friends or to contribute with anyone. They will not feel that they are wrong until they grew up and become adults. In that time they will notice that they have no friends or anyone around him. It will be very hard in that time to recover what he did. Not to mention that the kids who stay a lot in the Internet they got some issues. They will have pain in their packs and in their hands. This pain will be noticed after they grew up. But they will feel that their eyes are becoming weaker with time. It is the main reason for why too many people are wearing glasses in these days. They should be censored in what they see, how long they set in front of their computers or laptops and how they set. Second, The Internet can be used by governments to ensure the safety. It is a tool that the governments can use to detect the strange cases and stop them right away. There were some cases those terrorist used emails to contact each other. If their emails were controlled and under the government eyes they would probably save human lives. Governments should also watch the text massaging and instant massaging such â€Å"WhatsApp† or â€Å"skype† because it may used to plan for something. If governments work harder in the telecommunication security side, they would achieve many things that they are trying to do by other methods. They may detect a terrorist or also a murder evident, these things should not be ignored. Other wise we will watch a new type of terrorist that is more crazy than the previous ones. Third, There are types ot thieves and terrorist. In these days the worse type ot it is the hacker. There are a lot of hackers in this time. Those hackers may do small things such hacking an email. They also may do huge things like trying to hack a financial websites and steal the money from it. There are a lot of people who shops in the Internet and they are all afraid from the hackers or the fake website. Since they Just fill in their credit card information. They will find out that they were stolen. There are many fake websites and hackers that use Internet to gain money. The huge what hackers can do is trying to steal a bank. If government do not secure banks, people money will Just disappear. All the financial websites should be secured and controlled by the government so no body get stolen. Finally, The Internet can be a very useful tool to develop and to live a better life. However, this can never be unless that the Internet was secured and under the government eyes. I hope that people understand the meaning of the Internet and how harmful can it be. I also hope that people understand how a useful it is if it was used properly. How to cite People have become overly dependent on technology, Essays People Have Become Overly Dependent on Technology Free Essays Humans have been called the animals which make things, and at no time in history has this been so obvious as the present. Today, every human activity is dependent upon various tools, machines, and systems, from growing food to providing shelter to communication, healthcare, and entertainment. Some machines, like the tractor, speed up and make more efficient activities that humans have done for hundreds of thousands of years. We will write a custom essay sample on People Have Become Overly Dependent on Technology or any similar topic only for you Order Now Others such as the airplane or the Internet, make possible things that humans have never been able to do before. This collection of devices, capabilities, and the knowledge that accompanies them is called technology. We can say that â€Å"living without technology is like living without air† in this technical world of today. Therefore, we are much dependent on technology. Broadly speaking, technology is how people modify the world to suit their own purposes. From the Greek word techne, meaning art or artifice or craft, technology literally means the act of making or crafting, but more generally it refers to the diverse collection of processes and knowledge that people use to extend human abilities and to satisfy human needs and wants. Technology has been going on since humans first formed a blade from a piece of flint, harnessed fire, or dragged a sharp stick across the ground to create a furrow for planting seeds, but today it exists to a degree unprecedented in history. Planes, trains, and automobiles carry people and cargo from place to place at high speeds. Telephones, television, and computer networks help people communicate with others across the street or around the world. Medical technologies, from vaccines to Stem Cell therapy, allow people to live longer, healthier lives. 00 years ago people’s average age of death was from 40 to 45. But now it’s 75. Furthermore, technology is evolving even as we speak, with new technologies being created and existing technologies being improved and extended. The benefits of technology are usually obvious, if they were not, it would probably never be developed, but the disadvantages and dangers are often hidden. A perfect example is chlorofluorocarbons, or C FCs. When CFCs were invented, no one realized that these chemicals used as refrigerants would eventually damage the ozone layer. Today, the Internet is having profound effects on society, how people interact and communicate with one another, how they do their business, and how they get their entertainment and recreation, but no one knows exactly what to expect from it in future. Computers make our lives easier and give us new ways to learn about the things we’re interested in. They make it possible to do many things from the comfort of our own home — we can shop online, keep in touch with our friends online, even go to school online. They make it easier to record and organize information and entertain us with a nearly endless variety of games. However, it’s still important to maintain a life outside of the cyber world; a life spent attached to a computer screen isn’t a real life. When a computer becomes the central point of a person’s life, they undergo a change in behavior; they become lazy and develop anti-social tendencies, and, in some severe cases, simply cannot function without a computer. Some people say that we are not really dependent on technology. We can live without the technology. Our ancestors did it, so why can’t we? I would ask these questions: When was the last time you solve math problems without using calculator? When was the last time you went to library to find information instead of searching from internet? Also time has changed since our ancestors era. Has technology really taken over our lives this much? Where we can’t go 2 minutes without checking our phone to see if we have a text? Where we can’t go a day or two without checking our e-mail, and facebook? We can’t even walk across a campus without seeing a student on the phone, laptop or listening to their iPods. All this makes it particularly important that people understand and are comfortable with the concepts and workings of modern technology. Today’s people, including me, have become socially inept and too dependent on technology. Now this isn’t meant to be a hate technology thread, because technology really can be awesome at times. From a personal standpoint, people benefit both at work and at home by being able to choose the best products for their purposes, to operate the products properly, and to troubleshoot them when something goes wrong. And from a societal standpoint, an informed citizenry improved the chances that decisions about the use of technology will be made rationally and responsibly. But sometimes we take technology too seriously, and depend on it too much. If your computer breaks, don’t get pissed about it. If the Internet goes down, it’s not the end of the world. If your phone is broken, don’t kill yourself. And ask this question from yourself: How long can you â€Å"survive† without technology? Source A’s purpose if to inform the Reichstag of the USSR’s weakness and needs in economic aid. Dr Walter Simon is paying respects to the Soviet Republic, hence giving a positive view on the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. 2) The treaty of Rapallo had enormous benefits for both Russia and Germany. According to source B, some reasons for this entente would have been to compensate the war and civilian damages; indeed, this treaty permitted both countries to get back on their feet military, politically and economically. This contrasts with the reasons cited in source A, where it seems more in an act of pity for Russia that Germany sign the treaty, in fact, in source A, Russia is considered a weak state that needs aid, whereas in sources B and D, Russia is viewed as equally weak military and economically where they shall co-operate in a spirit of mutual goodwill in meeting the economic need of both countries. Indeed, in source D, the agreement is concentrated on the issue of Poland, which both countries seem to be opposed against, and where a reason for the signing of the treaty is made out of hatred against Poland and how it weakens both countries. Sources D and A share a common opinion on the inferiority of Russia to Germany, as source D cites that Germany will create in Russia an armaments industry made to serve the Reich. 3) Source C’s origin is an extract from a letter from Chicherin to the French foreign minister on the treaty of Rapallo on the 29th of April 1922. The purpose of this letter was clearly to let the French government know that the treaty of Rapallo had no secret intentions against the French. The value of this source for historians would be its connectivity with the moment in history when it was recorded and the actual point of view of one of the players of European history. The fact that it is such a major component of the time – Chicherin – that writes the letter gives this historic letter an even greater deal of importance, for he had personal experience and direct views on what was happening at that time. However the limitation in this letter is that it may as well be untrue facts he is stating but only his personal opinion and viewpoint. Considering the relationship between the reader and writer, prejudices and cultural standpoints of the author are to be questioned. The origin of source D is one of the proposals to partition Poland to the Reichswehr leaders after the Treaty of Rapallo by General Von Seeckt on September 11th 1922. The purpose of this proposal is to express a negative viewpoint on the elevation of Poland as an independent country. The speaker is clearly trying to convince his audience teaming up with Russia to eliminate Poland. The value of a document like this for historians is that it provides and indication of the nature of some feelings against Poland from the Germans, as the facts that are stated in the source are justified and make sense, it would probably be shared with the public. Thus enhancing the value of knowledge in international relations at that time, providing an intimate glimpse into these relations. However the limitation is of course the fact that this opinion might be false and completely unshared with the public, molded around personal hatred and opinion. 4) Russia and Germany had both been undermined from the treaty of Versailles, with Germany being an enemy of the powers of the league of Nations and Russia haven gotten out of the war before its end, both had had disastrous consequences due to the treaty of Versailles. In the early 1920s Germany was interested in signing a treaty with the Soviet Union to enhance political, economic and military expansion and to prevent any more threat from the Polish Republic. Poland was apparently France’s vassal and with its emergence, took some land away from both Germany and Russia, hence invigorating hatred from its neighbors. This tension between the small state and the two major powers continued and menaced the peace settlement that was supposed to be implemented by all nations according to the treaty of Versailles. Germany wanted to rearm the Reichswehr and this went against the articles settled in the Treaty of Versailles, which is why Germany and the Soviet Union secretly settled some points of the Rapallo treaty underground, such as the land the USSR allocated for German military training. This went against the treaty of Versailles because it stated that Germany was only allowed 100,000 trained military soldiers. Here are two issues that transgress the Treaty of Berlin, indeed with the treaty of Rapallo came an empowering of Germany and Russia, which was what Versailles settlements were looking to diminish. In fact for France the treaty of Rapallo greatly weakened the chances of isolating Germany, which now informally allied with Russia. This meant that the whole Geo-political settlement created with the emergence of the small states such as Poland was threatened because they were now surrounded with two major powers that were helping each other out economically, politically and military. The impact of Rapallo on the small states was that two major powers that hated the new emergences of these newly independent nations were now allied together with hatred. This meant that if Germany and Russia recovered quickly enough (and with the new cooperative treaty this was likely) the newly made states were going to be stuck in the middle and would suffer a great deal of tensions from Germany and Russia.
